Furry Guru Interview - Scout
Welcome to another Furry Guru interview from the series which focuses on how our animal companions can help us through difficult times, teach us important life lessons and be sources of unconditional love when we need it most.
It was love at first sight for our latest furry guru Scout and his human mama Stephanie. The Boston based higher education professional and blogger adopted the kill-shelter escapee over 7 years ago, and they have been two peas in a pod ever since. I spoke with Stephanie about her furry guru and how he has cracked her heart wide open to a happier and healthier way of being.
Tell us about your furry guru and how you came into each other’s lives
My guy, Scout, brought light to my life 7 years ago. I had just finished graduate school and was living alone in Boston. I knew that I wanted to adopt a dog and searched for months before finding Scout. He was being fostered in Arkansas after being rescued from a kill shelter and when I saw his picture, I knew that he was my dog. There was a look in his eyes that was so sweet and pure and I instantly felt connected.
How would you describe the relationship between you and your furry guru? What does your typical day/time together look like?
Scout is so much more than a pet – he is truly my family! We are both sensitive souls and highly influenced by the energy around us. So often Scout is my mirror and allows me to witness the energy that I am giving off.
He is a nervous guy with severe separation anxiety so I’m lucky enough to work from home several days a week. We take walks throughout the day, spontaneous play and treat breaks, and when I’m working you can find Scout right next to me. And I can always count on Scout to remind me when it’s time to wrap-up for the day because he’ll peek over my screen with his “It’s time to go outside.” face!
Tell us about a time of personal struggle or hardship in your life, which was made easier by your furry guru and how they helped you get through.
Scout really opened up my heart and brought light into my life. I was in an unhealthy and unhappy place when I found Scout. I was a total workaholic, not taking care of myself or my relationships, and not enjoying life. A typical day consisted of multiple coffee runs, sugary snacks, 15-18 hour workdays, fast-food meals, and very little sleep. And everything changed the day I brought Scout home. Scout really snapped me out of it and changed my outlook on life. How could I look at his adorable little face and not smile?
What’s the most important lesson your furry guru has taught you?
Scout has taught me the importance of play and letting go. He can be sound asleep one minute and running around the house with a toy the next. He wants to walk when he wants to walk and it’s a great reminder to enjoy the moment and to take a break from the daily routine. It’s a wonderful release to get out of my own head and run around the house or yard chasing Scout and laughing as he exudes pure joy for the moment.
What’s your favourite way to spend time together?
I love when we take long family walks (me, my boyfriend, and Scout) on cool fall days and watching Scout and my boyfriend play together. My favorite way to spend time together, though, is when Scout cuddles next to me on the couch, my desk chair, in the car, my meditation pillow, anywhere! I love having him near me.
Best memory/funny story involving your furry guru?
My best memory with Scout is the day that I brought him home. Our first day together was life changing for us both. We were both nervous – I was nervous about caring for my first pet and he was scared to be in a new place after being transported from Arkansas. We both just stared at each other for a long time but over the course of the day we bonded on long walks, playtime on the floor, belly rubs, and treats. By the end of the night he was cuddled up with me in bed. It was a magical day – our hearts opened and our defensive walls crumbled.
Finish the sentences
1- If my furry guru was a person/different animal they would be… a yogi. He has perfected downward and upward facing dog, often sleeps in child’s pose and is usually hanging out on my yoga mat or meditation pillow.
2- Without my furry guru I would be… I’d be lost.
3- One word to describe my furry guru is... love.
Any parting wisdom?
Rescuing an animal was one of the best decisions that I ever made! Animals can be some of our greatest teachers, best friends, and sources of love and compassion. I can’t imagine my life without Scout and wouldn’t trade one minute of our time together for anything. If there is even a small part of you that feels called to adopt an animal, my advice is to do it. And if you aren’t ready or in a position to adopt an animal you can still learn from animals by volunteering at an animal shelter or dog/cat sitting for your friends and family. You won’t be sorry.
